The salon
Colour Play fills an industrial-loft space in Mill Creek: exposed wood joists, string lights, polished concrete and roll-up doors that open onto a patio. It was fitted out for working professionals, so the details stylists care about are already handled.
Every station has a large wood-framed mirror and a wood-and-steel cabinet with deep drawers. A wall of floor-to-ceiling cabinets holds backstock. The shampoo row sits beside the patio doors, and clients wait on a velvet sofa with coffee in hand.
I love the energy of a salon: the conversations, the laughter, stylists bouncing ideas off one another and learning from each other.
When Melinda opened Colour Play in 2020, she chose a traditional open salon over a suite setup. Nobody disappears behind a closed door, stylists call each other over to admire a color, and clients get to know more than the person doing their hair.
